Playwrights invited to submit scripts for performances at 2012 festival

Thursday, September 22, 2011

NEWPORT, R.I. – Playwrights are invited to submit scripts to a Salve Regina University theatre arts committee, which will select several to be performed during a week-long festival in summer 2012 at the historic Casino Theatre.

Scripts will only be accepted through Nov. 1.

A panel of readers will select several 10-minute plays and one full-length play script to be performed during the festival, scheduled June 24-30, 2012 at the 9 Freebody St. theatre.

The 10-minute play category is open to all playwrights and all genres of scripts. The play committee will choose between eight and 12 plays for performance, with the audience favorite receiving a cash prize. Playwrights should submit their work electronically to http://salvetheatreplayfestival.submishmash.com/submit.

Full-length plays will be accepted from Rhode Island resident playwrights only and must be submitted by mail. One play will be chosen for a workshop production in the Casino Theatre. Playwrights should submit work that has not been previously produced. Plays that have received readings will be accepted.

A short rehearsal process will take place prior to the festival and the winning playwright will be encouraged to attend and make edits. Interested Rhode Island playwrights can mail a copy of their script to the Theatre Arts program at Salve Regina University, 100 Ochre Point Ave., Newport, RI 02840.

Electronic submissions of full-length plays will not be accepted.

The committee will only accept submissions from Oct. 1-Nov. 1. No plays received after that date will be read. There is no submission fee.

The reading committee consists of faculty, students and alumni of Salve Regina’s theatre and English programs.
