NEWPORT, R.I. – The intensive summer English program of The Monterey Institute of International Studies will be held June 28-August 1 at Salve Regina University.
Through an agreement brokered by Salve Regina President Jane Gerety and Middlebury College President Ronald Liebowitz, international students will have the opportunity to enroll in the Middlebury-Monterey Summer Intensive College English program over the next three summers at Salve Regina.
The Monterey, Calif.-based MIIS is a graduate school of Middlebury College, Vermont.
The program, designed for students who currently attend or are interested in attending undergraduate programs in the United States, offers comprehensive coursework in the English language. Students will also learn about American history and culture through content covered in class as well as field trips to nearby Boston and New York.
“Consistent with the University’s strategic plan, which calls for programs that both attract talented students from diverse regions and backgrounds, and take full advantage of Newport’s unique historical and cultural heritage throughout the year, this partnership with Middlebury College and its graduate school, the Monterey Institute of International Studies, will bring college and pre-college students from around the world and immerse them in intensive English-language learning and in all that Newport has to offer,” said Dr. Dean de la Motte, provost and dean of faculty at Salve Regina.
“Like the Swiss Teachers Program, which will return for a fourth year in 2012, the Intensive College English (ICE) program will expand Salve Regina’s place in the world and enrich our community each summer,” de la Motte said. “We are delighted to be working with the two institutions best known in North America for the quality of their intensive training in language and culture.”
Each summer between 60 and 75 students will be enrolled in the ICE program and immersed in an environment where English is spoken 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They will receive more than 20 hours of instruction per week in English for academic purposes, focusing on listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills and strategies. They will participate in life skills workshops and continually build their understanding of U.S. history and culture.
Classes will be taught at the Antone Academic Center and students will be housed in Salve Regina’s residence halls. Participants in the Middlebury-Monterey Summer ICE will also have access to campus resources, including academic facilities, the library, computing centers and recreational facilities.
The Monterey Institute of International Studies is a graduate school of Middlebury College that was established in 1955 to prepare students linguistically and culturally for international careers. It provides international professional education in international policy and management, translation and interpretation, language teaching, sustainable development and non-proliferation.
