NEWPORT, R.I. – A public screening of the 2009 film, “The Soloist,” will be presented on Saturday, May 8 at 3:30 p.m. at Salve Regina University’s Antone Academic Center, corner of Lawrence and Leroy avenues.
The film is being offered in conjunction with the Newport County Community Mental Health Center’s Adult Outpatient Emergency Services. Suggested donation is $10.
“The Soloist,” featuring Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey, Jr., tells the true story of Nathaniel Ayers, a gifted young cellist crushed by the onset of severe mental illness. Steve Lopez discovers Ayers suffering from schizophrenia and living on the sidewalks in Los Angeles, and writes about him for the Los Angeles Times.
A brief panel discussion, facilitated by NCCMHC staff will follow. The discussion will be moderated Dr. Joseph Bevilacqua, former director of the Rhode Island Mental Health, Retardation & Hospitals.
