WINE TASTING & AUCTION BENEFITS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN VISUAL ART

NEWPORT, R.I. - "There can be no bargain without wine."

The Salve Regina community will prove this Latin proverb true on Thursday, April 23, when it hosts its third Wine Tasting & Auction to support the university's endowed scholarship in visual art. The public is welcome to attend the event, which begins at 6 p.m. in historic Ochre Court.

A wide range of items -- from the practical to the extravagant -- will be featured in the auction. Attendees can bid on a night of babysitting services or a weekend getaway to Paris. Ryan Maccione, a Salve Regina alumnus from the Class of 1994 and co-owner of Segway of Newport, donated a Segway Personal Transporter to be put up for bid. Other auction items include African safaris, a weeklong stay at a Tuscan resort, golf outings and tickets to theater and sporting events.

Len Panaggio, corporate beverage director for the Newport Harbor Corporation, has assisted Salve Regina in assembling an impressive list of sponsors for the tasting, including Chateau St. Michelle, Kendall-Jackson, Moet/Hennessey and Penfolds Winery. Wines up for auction include vintage Bordeaux, 2001 Ceretto Prapo Barolo and 2003 Chateau Montelena cabernet sauvignon.

Admission to the event begins at 6 p.m. for "enthusiasts," who pay $45 for the main wine tasting and auctions, hors d'oeuvres from Blackstone Catering and valet parking. For $100, "connoisseurs" may attend an exclusive premium wine tasting at 5 p.m. and enjoy advance bidding on the silent auction as well as reserved seating for the live auction.

Proceeds from the event support the Endowed Scholarship in Visual Art, which was established last year by art department faculty, alumni and friends. This endowed scholarship will be awarded annually to students majoring in art. Future recipients will be chosen by the art faculty based on creative talent and scholarship.

"This auction will help the future of the Salve Regina art program and its most talented art students by growing the Endowed Scholarship in Visual Art," said Jay Lacouture, art department chairman. "By featuring the work of the artists who believe in the University's art program, the spirit of this auction will help connect the present to the future."

A number of faculty members, art alumni and regional artists have donated original artwork to the Wine Tasting and Auction, including Ben Butler, Richard Grosvenor, Dana Levin, Daniel Ludwig and Anthony Quinn.

Salve Regina's art department is one of a select group of accredited members of the National Association of Schools of Art & Design (NASAD) who devote themselves exclusively to a bachelor of arts curriculum.
