NEWPORT, R.I. - More than 100 researchers who are part of Rhode Island's Idea Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE), a collaboration of some of the state's higher education institutions, will hold their Annual Winter Retreat at Salve Regina University tomorrow (Friday, Jan. 26) from noon to 5 p.m.
Attending the retreat will be graduate and undergraduate students, scientists, investigators, administrators and faculty representing Salve Regina University, the University of Rhode Island School of Pharmacy; Brown University; Rhode Island College; Roger Williams University and Providence College.
Nationwide, INBRE promotes the development, coordination, and sharing of research resources and expertise that will expand the research opportunities and increase the number of competitive investigators.
Supported by the NCRR Division of Research Infrastructure, INBRE are intended to enhance the caliber of scientific faculty at research institutions and undergraduate schools, thereby attracting more promising students to these organizations. INBRE is the second phase of the Biomedical Research Infrastructure Networks (BRIN) Program, which began by providing planning grants in 2001.
Each INBRE grantee establishes a multidisciplinary research network with a scientific focus that builds and strengthens the lead and partner institutions' biomedical research expertise and infrastructure; and builds and increases the research base and capacity by providing research support to faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students at the participating institutions.
It also provides research opportunities for undergraduate students and serves as a "pipeline" for undergraduate students to continue in health research careers within "Idea" states; and provides outreach activities to students at undergraduate institutions, community colleges, and tribal colleges participating in the state's network; as well as enhancing science and technology knowledge of the state's workforce.
