NEWPORT, R.I. - Three Salve Regina University students sailing at the 2006 Yngling North American Championships last week won the junior division title and placed third overall after a 10-race regatta at Thunder Bay in Alpena Mich. on Aug. 18-20.
Salve Regina senior James Randall (Excelsior, Minn.), junior Michael Komar (Plymouth, Mass.), and sophomore Meredith Dart (Dover, Mass) competed against 22 boats from the United States and Canada. After 10 races and battling inclement weather at Lake Huron's Thunder Bay, the Salve Regina crew placed third overall and won the junior division title.
"They did an absolutely great job," said Salve Regina sailing coach John Ingalls. "They worked extremely well together. Michael and Meredith had to drive all the way from Newport to Michigan pulling the boat."
That boat, incidentally, is the same boat Ingalls took to New Rochelle, France, June 30-July 8 when Randall and Komar joined him to win the gold medal at the World Open Yngling Championship. Their victory over a field of 41 international teams was the best-ever finish by a United States crew in the Open World event.
Salve Regina's string of successes is garnering quite a bit of attention from the sailing community. Many of the "sailing capital of the world's" most influential delegates will gather at the Newport Shipyard as Charlie and Posy Dana host a tribute to the emergence of the university's program.
The Danas, owners of Newport Shipyard and members of the New York Yacht Club, will host the tribute on Thursday, Aug. 31 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Newport Shipyard - Belle's Café, 1 Washington St.
In addition to honoring the Yngling Open World Championship and the Yngling North American Junior Championship, formal recognition will be extended to thank sponsors who funded the university's purchase of a fleet of 20 new 420s for competition. The new fleet, which will be in the water for the start of the fall 2006 season, makes it possible for Salve Regina to host major regattas in Newport, and instantly elevates the team to the forefront of collegiate sailing.
These Salve Regina students and their families will attend with their coach to accept congratulations, as well as a proclamation from the city of Newport.
