SINGER, ACTRESS ROSE WEAVER TO PERFORM FEB. 26

NEWPORT, R.I. - Singer/actress Rose Weaver, a mainstay in the Providence performing arts scene who has appeared as a featured soloist at The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, among many others, will present a free concert on Monday, Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m. in Ochre Court.

Weaver, whose musical motto is "Keeping Heritage Alive," developed her style of blues and jazz while growing up in the woods of Georgia. She has polished her performance art on stages throughout the world. From sultry ballads to shuffles, swings or the blues, Weaver captures the essence of great songs by paying attention to the underlying grooves of the period in which they were created. She dubs her interpretive performance technique as "Jazz Cabaret."

She was recently awarded the 2000 Pell Award for Excellence in the Arts, and the 1999-2000 Antonio Cirino Memorial Fellowship from the Rhode Island Foundation. She is known locally for her many performances with Trinity Repertory Company, including the recent production of "The School for Scandal," as well as roles in "A Christmas Carol," "Into the Woods," "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill," and "From the Mississippi Delta."

Weaver is currently playing the role of Berniece in August Wilson's "The Piano Lesson," which runs through March 11 at Trinity Rep. Her acting credits also include work for PBS, Paramount Pictures, New Century/Vista Films, the National Theatre Company, NBC-TV, and CBS-TV. She's also enjoyed roles on popular television shows "L.A. Law" and "The Heat of the Night" and in films like Poetic Justice and The Accused.

Weaver received her master of fine arts degree from Brown University and her bachelor of arts degree from Wheaton College. She is in her second term as a board member for The Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, and she's a member of Actor's Equity Association, Screen Actors Guild, and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.
