His Holiness the Dalai Lama visited Salve Regina University on Thursday, November 17, 2005. The primary purpose of his visit was to meet with his longtime friends and supporters, Sen. and Mrs. Claiborne Pell, who established the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy at Salve Regina University in 1996. After the visit with Sen. and Mrs. Pell, His Holiness visited Ochre Court where about 4,000 members of the Salve Regina community and the general public were gathered under a tent on the lawn. His Holiness graciously gave a public lecture on compassion entitled "A Human Approach to World Peace." After he spoke, His Holiness answered questions from students who have studied his writings in their courses. President M. Therese Antone, R.S.M., presented His Holiness with the first Claiborne Pell Center Award, and students Tony Vellucci '08 and Matilda Mutanguha '07 gave him a Salve Regina baseball cap on behalf of the student body.
