THE CLAIBORNE PELL CENTER AWARD The Claiborne Pell Center Award recognizes and honors those who make a difference and promote both dialogue and action for a more peaceful world. The Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy at Salve Regina University was established by an Act of Congress on Sept. 28, 1996 , to honor Rhode Island Senator Claiborne Pell upon his retirement from a distinguished 36-year career in the U.S. Senate. The Pell Center perpetuates two of the Senator's principal goals: encouraging international dialogue to achieve a more peaceful world and preparing citizens for an informed and active role in local, national and world affairs. In addition, the Pell Center continues to further the legacy of Senator Pell in education, the arts and humanities.
