JULIE SLOAN, STAINED GLASS EXPERT, PRESENTS 2nd OF THREE PUBLIC LECTURES

NEWPORT, R.I. - Julie L. Sloan (www.jlsloan.com), a foremost specialist in the field of stained glass who has written extensively on the development of American stained glass as a cultural and aesthetics entity, will present an illustrated lecture titled "American Glass and the Homes of the Wealthy" on Thursday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. in Ochre Court.

Sloan's presentation, the second of three in a series she is presenting at Salve Regina, is free and open to the public. She will offer insights on the Gilded Age and explore the attitudes of the rich toward stained glass. Historic Newport architecture, such as The Breakers, Kingscote, Marble House and Belcourt Castle will illustrate the lecture.

CHARLESTON'S VISIONARY MAYOR DISCUSSES URBAN PLANNING ISSUES IN NEWPORT

NEWPORT, R.I. – Charleston, S.C. Mayor Joseph C. Riley Jr., the visionary credited with transforming his city into one of the most livable and progressive cities in the United States, will offer his expertise on urban design and livability issues during his visit to Newport on Thursday, Oct. 28.

Riley's visit has been coordinated by Salve Regina's Cultural and Historic Preservation Program, along with the Preservation Society of Newport County. Named one of the 25 most dynamic mayors in America by Newsweek, Riley will meet with Salve Regina students and present two public lectures during his visit.

First, at 1 p.m. , Riley will meet with Salve's Principles of Historic Preservation class in Room 107 of McAuley Hall. Riley will later conduct a panel discussion on historic preservation, which is open to the public, at 4 p.m. in the Newport City Hall Council Chamber. Then at 6 p.m. , Riley will give a public lecture titled, "Creating a Livable City : Everyone's Responsibility," at 6 p.m. in Salve Regina University's Bazarsky Lecture Hall.
