TOUR OF THE JOHN STEVENS SHOPS
1:00-5:00 pm, Bus will depart from the Young Building
Additional Cost: $40.00

This optional tour of the John Stevens Shop, a historic stone carving  business established in 1705, will include a slide show on the shop’s  history, a discussion of the process of cutting inscriptions in  stone, an examination of the shop’s works in progress and significant  national monuments, and a tour of the nearby Island Cemetery, where  many historic pieces from the John Stevens Shop survive. Nicholas W. Benson, owner and creative director of the John Stevens Shop, Judith Dupré, author of the forthcoming publication, Monuments, and James C. Garman, Coordinator of the Cultural and Historic Preservation Program at Salve Regina University, will lead this exciting on-site experience. Participants will receive lunch as part of the tour and transportation to and from the shop and cemetery. The tour is limited to 25.

 

TOUR OF THE NEWPORT MANSIONS
1:00-5:00 pm, Bus will depart from the Young Building
Additional Cost: $40.00

This optional tour of Newport’s Gilded Age mansions will examine the twin issues of memory and commemoration through the lens of late twentieth-century historic preservation. Participants will visit three sites, the Elms, the Isaac Bell House and Kingscote. Representatives from the Preservation Society of Newport County will be available to answer questions and provide explanations of interior spaces. Participants will receive lunch as part of the tour and transportation to and from the mansions. The tour is limited to 25.
