Interests
Art Frankel has been a member of the Department of Psychology since 1978. He teaches courses in introductory, social and experimental psychology, as well as courses focusing on critical thinking, prejudice and the interface between psychology and law. In recent years, much of his time is devoted to teaching these courses more effectively and finding ways to encourage his students to think carefully about psychological issues. His early research focused mostly on egotism, self-handicapping and attribution and was published in prominent social psychology journals. He also served on the editorial board of the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology in the 1980s. His more recent research, which has been published in the journal Sex Roles, and presented at national and regional conferences, has focused on how gender role expectations are likely to inhibit women’s attempts to safeguard their sexual health. He has also collaborated with many undergraduates over the last several years on problems that are of mutual interest resulting in research studies that have been presented at regional and national psychology conferences. Art is married to Camille Frankel, the chair of the English Department at Portsmouth High School. They have two sons and a daughter-in-law: Andrew, a grad student in Buddhist Studies, who is currently a soccer coach at Super Soccer Stars NYC and an assistant coach for the Columbia University men’s soccer team; Matthew, a lawyer specializing in employment and labor law for Nixon Peabody in San Francisco; and Kate, a doctoral student at Berkeley. Art was born in Brooklyn, NY and attended PS 89, PS 119, JHS 240, and Midwood High School before leaving (escaping) NYC to attend college at SUNY New Paltz, where he obtained both his bachelor's and master's degrees in psychology. He obtained his Ph.D. in experimental social psychology from Dartmouth College and had a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Connecticut Health Center before coming to Salve Regina University in 1978. Art's extracurricular activities include fitness training, playing in a men's baseball league and also enjoying an occasional glass of single malt scotch (which definitely enhances his mental fitness if not his physical fitness). He likes to talk about sports psychology, science and pseudoscience, and teaching, and enjoys conversations with funny and/or unusual people.
