My abiding interest is ethics, specifically the application of ethics to issues within American life. Our political/cultural instincts for individualism and self-interest offer a challenge to traditional ethics, in that the latter often emerges either from a secular matrix of collective well-being and happiness, or from a religious tradition of loving God and neighbor. A new application of ethical insights is needed. As we face challenges in medical care, or in technology, or in international relations, I see a new age dawning in applied ethics.

Currently, I'm examining the work of ethical institutes, as they currently exist in the United States. Ethical institutes give valuable service not merely to the student of ethics but to professional individuals established in their careers. I'd like to see SRU be the center of an ethics institute.
