Pre-licensure ADMISSION All students requesting entrance into the Department of Nursing must (1) be accepted into Salve Regina University and (2) complete the Application for Admission to the Nursing Program. The application is available in the Nursing department office and must be submitted by March 1 of the year prior to taking the first nursing courses. Incoming freshmen will be designated as pre-nursing majors. This designation indicates that the student intends to pursue admission into the Department of Nursing and will enroll in the required prerequisite courses (BIO 205/206/210 & CHM 121). Students must achieve a minimum grade of “C” (74) or “P” in all prerequisite courses, nursing courses and nursing support courses (PSY100, SOC110, STA201) prior to entering the major or concurrently with nursing courses. When a nursing course is a prerequisite to a nursing course, the grade of “C” must be achieved before starting that nursing course. Students wishing to transfer into the Department of Nursing from another institution or from another department at Salve Regina University must also complete the application process by March 1 of the given year. The student must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 and a minimum grade of “C” in the prerequisites in order to be considered for the nursing major. Student applications will be reviewed by the Admission, Progression and Retention committee at the end of the spring semester. Students will be notified in writing of the committee’s decision by June 15. Progression in the Nursing Major In order to maintain status as a nursing major, the student must achieve a minimum grade of “C” in all nursing and nursing support courses. In addition, the student must maintain an overall cumulative GPA of 2.7 in order to continue in the Nursing major. No student can advance to the third year level nursing courses until successfully completing all second year level nursing courses. A student who does not maintain status in the Department of Nursing because of failure to meet one or more of the stated requirements will be dismissed from the department. The student may petition the department for reinstatement. If a student receives a grade of less than “C” in a nursing or nursing support course, this course may be repeated only once. Failure to achieve a grade of “C” or higher in the repeated course will result in dismissal from the nursing major. In addition, students must satisfactorily pass the clinical component of nursing courses in order to progress in the major. Any student who fails the clinical component of a nursing course will be unable to attain a grade of higher than C- for the course. The student will not be allowed to progress and the course must be repeated. A student may repeat no more than a total of two (2) courses (nursing or nursing support courses).
