Program Manager: Ernest E. Rothman, Ph.D.

Computational Science is a relatively young interdisciplinary field that involves the development and application of computational methodologies and techniques on high-performance computers to help solve problems in science and engineering. The emergence of computational science as a discipline has resulted primarily from advances in both computer architectures and computational algorithms which exploit these architectures.

The minor in Computational Science, offered by the Departments of Chemistry and Mathematical Sciences, provides students with the opportunity to:

  • Acquire an understanding of the development, analysis, and implementation of computational algorithms on high-performance computers.

Computational Science Minor: Requirements

Students must take courses which cover topics in computer science, mathematics, and an application area in science or business as well as courses that emphasize the interplay among these disciplines.

Students minoring in computational science must take CMP 201, 202, 301, 302, and 400. In addition, students must take at least one of the following two-semester sequences:

CHM 113-114, BIO 111-112, PHY 101-102, MGT 311-320, or any two of the following: ECN 320, 407, 412, 471, 477.

Students must confer with the Program Manager before registering for CMP courses.
