CAGS in Substance Abuse and Treatment: Concentration in Holistic Counseling

Our Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies (CAGS) programs provide students with opportunities to continue their graduate studies upon completion of a master's degree program.

The CAGS in substance abuse and treatment with a concentration in holistic counseling is designed for individuals interested in completing the continuing education units needed to meet national certification standards and Rhode Island state licensing requirements. To earn this certificate, students complete four courses (12 credits).

Students who wish to enter this program must have:

  • A master's degree in mental health counseling or equivalent master's degree in health care or other behavioral degree programs from an accredited institution.
  • The prerequisite courses HLC509: Theories of Counseling, HLC515: Assessment and Treatment Planning, and HLC516: Group Process, or the equivalent courses from an accredited institution.
  • Any additional prerequisite courses that may be required depending upon the applicant's academic and/or professional background.

Licensing laws vary from state to state. Students are responsible for knowing the requirements for the state in which they are seeking licensure.

  • HLC620: Theory and Overview of Substance Abuse Treatment
  • HLC621: Ethics and Confidentiality in Health Care
  • HLC622: Neuroscience of Chemical Dependency
  • HLC623: Substance Abuse Treatment
