Chris Robertson - Football

Coach Robertson is entering his second season at the helm of the Salve Regina University football team. As he works to build the foundation of the program, Robertson is developing an attitude for his players to adopt.

"Our attitudes are positive," Robertson said. "From the day our kids show up, we expect them to believe in themselves. That's the feeling we want engrained in the kids throughout the program."

In his first season, Robertson coached Salve Regina to a 1-8 record. While the team struggled, four players earned individual honors in the New England Football Conference in 2006. Senior wide receiver Scott Peters was named First-Team Boyd Division, while senior offensive lineman Ryan Thomas, junior linebacker John DeMartino and sophomore kick returner Jason Giordano all earned Second-Team, Boyd Division honors.

Robertson has coached at the college level for the past 11 years, including serving as the defensive coordinator and the head baseball coach at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Before joining WPI in 1999 he was the defensive coordinator at Siena College in Loudonville, N.Y., where he began his coaching career as an assistant coach in 1996. In 1998, his Siena defense was ranked 22nd nationally among Division 1-AA schools.

At WPI, Robertson compiled an overall record of 67-86. He is the only head coach in WPI baseball history to lead the Engineers to post-season tournaments, doing so in 2000 and 2004. Robertson coached many athletes at WPI who achieved post-season honors in the past five years. In baseball, he coached 10 All-NEWMAC, two All-New England, and one All-ECAC selections. On the gridiron, his defenses have produced 15 All-Freedom Football Conference, four All-New England, and four All-ECAC selections. Before coaching at Siena for three years (1996-98), Robertson attended the University of Albany where he received his undergraduate degree in mathematics and later his graduate degree in educational psychology and statistics. While at Albany, Robertson was a three-year starter on the varsity football squad, a three-year letterwinner, and a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-America©. In 1994, he received the Defensive Back of the Year Award and in 1995 served as a co-captain for the Great Danes.

"The program we are running here is all about opportunity," Robertson said. "From day one, when we first test the kids, they have an opportunity to be a part of the program. How hard they all work for their opportunities will determine the success of our program as a whole."

Assistant Coaches - Football

Nicholas LaFontaine is entering his first season as the offensive coordinator for Salve Regina. Doubling as the assistant intramurals coordinator at the school, LaFontaine is the second full-time staff member in the football program, along with head coach Chris Robertson. Before coming to Salve Regina, LaFontaine was an assistant coach under Bob Hall at the University of Albany since the spring of 2003. During his time with the Division I-AA Great Danes, LaFontaine spent one season as the running backs coach, and two seasons coaching the offensive line and tight ends. In addition to his coaching duties, LaFontaine also served as the program's recruiting coordinator and worked with school administrators on NCAA compliance and clearinghouse details.

LaFontaine also has been an assistant at Norwich University in Vermont (2002-03) and at his alma mater, Wesleyan University (2001-02). At Norwich, he was the running backs coach. At Wesleyan he coached the tight ends. A native of Windham, Conn., LaFontaine earned three varsity letters as a defensive end during his playing days for Wesleyan.
