NEWPORT, R.I. - Sophomore James Tollefson (Middletown, R.I.) and freshman Bobby Ernst (Needham, Mass.) each scored their first goals of the season and senior goalkeeper Kurt Ginthwain (Tolland, Conn.) made four saves to lead the Salve Regina University men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Coast Guard in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at Reynolds Field.
The win snaps a two-game losing skid for the Seahawks (1-2) and lifts their all-time mark against the Bears to 2-1. Senior Tim Olah (Glastonbury, Conn.) made 11 saves for Coast Guard.
The two teams played a scoreless first half that saw the Seahawks outshoot the Bears 10-5, and Olah's solid play kept his team in the game. In the second half, Ernst banged home a cross pass from sophomore Chris Knoth (East Islip, N.Y.) at 48:15 to give Salve Regina a 1-0 lead - their first lead of 2009.
At 67:41, the Seahawks were called for a foul in the box and Bears (2-1) senior Jason Larsen (Cedar Creek, Texas) was awarded a penalty kick. The ball was targeted for the right side of the net, but Ginthwain shuffled to his right and made the save on a shot that was chest-high. Fifteen minutes later, Tollefson sealed the win with an unassisted marker at 82:13.
"Our 1-0 lead was good, but the turning point of the match was the penalty kick," said Seahawk head coach Craig O'Rourke II. "They were pressing us and developed some dynamic play in our end and had us pressed into a tacking situation. We failed to clear a play, legs got tangled up, and the referee went to the spot with it. At that point, all the momentum was in their favor, and Kurt Ginthwain came up big again. He has now saved four of the five PK's that have been taken against him in the last two years. He came up huge and is our 'Man of the Match.' The goals were huge, but that was the turning point."
The Seahawks finished the match with a 19-14 edge in shots and held a slight 2-1 edge in corner kicks. Salve Regina was called for 21 fouls compared to 12 for the Bears.
The Seahawks return to action on Saturday when they travel to New England College for a 2:30 match.
