NORTHAMPTON, Mass.. - Salve Regina University women's tennis participated in the New England Women's Invitational Tennis Tournament with main draw matches on Friday at Smith College indoor courts. All first round action was played indoors at three sites - Smith, Mt. Holyoke, and Hampshire Colleges - which featured snow flurries during the early morning.
The Seahawk "A" draw pair matched up with Amherst College in an 8:30 a.m. start at Ainsworth Gymnasium. Sophomores Ashley McCall [Cincinnati, Ohio] and Kim Snyder [Newton, Mass.] opened with an 8-4 decision in doubles play over Seahawk junior Erin Phillips [Morristown, N.J.] and senior captain Jessica Timpano [Narragansett, R.I.]. Phillips evened the score with an 8-0 singles win over McCall. In Timpano's singles match with Snyder, the Lord Jeffs second-year player overcame an early break of serve to win 8-4 and advance with her partner in the main draw.
The Seahawk "B" draw pair of junior Valerie Leso [West Warwick, R.I.] and freshman Leeanne Soprano [Cranston, R.I.] took on the home team pair from Smith College. In the three-match format (doubles and two singles), the doubles match is played without ad scoring. Leso and Soprano played the 3-3 points to perfection for four of their five game victories before Pioneer juniors Maggie Steiner [Madison, Conn.] and Allyson Hawkins [Plainfield, N.H.] succeeded in the 13th game for an 8-5 win. Hawkins outlasted Leso, 8-5, in their singles meeting and Steiner bested Soprano, 8-0, to sweep the set for Smith.
Salve Regina pairs will compete in consolation matches on Saturday.
