A total of 18 schools competed in the event, the finals of the collegiate sailing circuit. The ICSA/Gill Coed Dinghy Championship is the granddaddy of the six collegiate national championships.  This regatta brings together the top nine teams from the Eastern and Western semifinals, held May 1-2 in Charleston, S.C. and Seattle, Wash. The 18 teams at each of those regattas had to qualify within their home district.

Salve Regina , which was competing in its first ICSA championship, placed one spot ahead of another East Bay program, Roger Williams University.
