Salve Regina University Athletic Hall Of Fame In recognition of the school's Fiftieth Anniversary (1947-1997), three individuals who played prominent roles in the success of Salve Regina athletics over the past five decades were selected as the initial inductees for the Salve Regina University Athletic Hall of Fame. The first three inductees were: Sister Mary Philemon Banigan R.S.M., athletic monitor and basketball coach; Eloise Evans '86, a two-time All America in track & field and cross country; and H. James "Jim" Nelson '85, who started the ice hockey program as a student-athlete. The inaugural class of inductees was honored at the first Hall of Fame induction ceremonies Saturday, February 14 as the Seahawk basketball teams hosted a doubleheader in Newport, Rhode Island. A second class of inductees was enshrined on October 3, 1998 at halftime of a Salve Regina University football game. Doubling the size of the Hall of Fame were Brother Michael Reynolds, athletic director and track & field coach; Christina Julius '90, basketball and softball standout; and Paul Kielbasa '81, a three-sport star. The Hall of Fame selections were made by a committee composed of Salve Regina administrators, faculty members, alumni representatives, and current student-athletes and coaches. The selections were made from a list of more than twenty nominations submitted by Salve alumni, faculty and staff. All nominations will remain active for three years. Those eligible for induction are any Salve athlete who graduated and competed in the intercollegiate program for a minimum of three years; and any coach, administrator, or faculty member who made a significant contribution to the success of the Salve athletic program. Former student-athletes are eligible five years after graduation. "The Hall of Fame has been in the planning stages for several years and we are very pleased it finally has become a reality," said John Rok, Vice President for Student Life who chaired the selection committee. "These initital inductees span several decades of Salve athletics. The entire Salve community owes a debt of gratitude to these outstanding individuals and we are pleased to have the opportunity to honor them," Rok continued. Each inductee will receive a personalized Hall of Fame plaque. A duplicate of each plaque will be displayed in the Hall of Fame gallery, which will be housed in the main lobby of the soon to be completed Rodgers Recreation Center. "Now that the Hall of Fame has become a reality, we hope more and more alumni become involved in the nominating process," said Del Malloy, Salve Regina Director of Athletics. "We were very pleased with the initial response, but we would like to add more names to the list, especially from the decades of the 50s, 60s and 70s."
