The Salve Regina University ENS-Alert Service

Salve Regina University has implemented an Emergency Notification System (ENS) designed to reach all students, faculty and staff using voice, e-mail and text messaging. Salve Regina administration and security personnel will use the system to broadcast vital information in the case of an emergency situation on campus or for severe weather-related advisories.

Powered by Blackboard Connect, this system will be known as the ENS-Alert service on campus. During critical events, the ENS-Alert service will be used to deliver advisories and instructions to registered users within the university community via cell phone, land lines, wireless PDA, text pager, e-mail and other communication devices.

Frequently Asked Questions:

QUESTION: How do I register?

ANSWER: Students, faculty and staff can register for the ENS-Alert service by logging in to My Salve. Students need to continue the process by reviewing and/or editing their contact information within the MY INFORMATION/MY STUDENT INFO areas. Step-by-step directions are listed on the main screen of My Salve. Faculty and staff may submit their information by following the directions on the ENS-Alert notice posted on the main screen after logging in to My Salve.

QUESTION: What data should I provide?

ANSWER: Because the ENS-Alert service will be used during emergency situations or for severe weather advisories, the most effective number is your mobile phone number. For students, all relevant data from the campus information system collected at the point of enrollment has been entered into the ENS-Alert system. This is why you must take the extra steps to verify or edit the mobile phone entry. Faculty and staff are also advised to provide their mobile phone numbers and to keep their phones in vibrate mode while on campus. If a mobile phone number has not been provided, the data will default back to the home phone number on file in the campus information system.

QUESTION: How will I know my registration is complete?

ANSWER: After submitting your mobile phone number you will receive a text confirmation. THE CONFIRMATION WILL BE SENT FROM A CALLER ID NUMBER APPEARING AS 23177 ON YOUR MOBILE DEVICE. SAVE THIS NUMBER ON YOUR MOBILE DEVICE AS SRU-ALERT. THIS WILL HELP YOU EASILY IDENTIFY ANY FUTURE ALERTS THAT ARE SENT.
If you do not save this number as SRU-Alert, any future notices will continue to appear as 23177 on your mobile device. Because this number will only be used in emergency or severe weather conditions you may not recognize it as vital information without the SRU-Alert code name.

THE FIRST ROUND OF CONFIRMATION MESSAGES WILL BE SENT ON WEDNESDAY APRIL 30, 2008.

A UNIVERSAL TEST OF THE ENS-ALERT SERVICE WILL TAKE PLACE ON FRIDAY, MAY 2 AT 3 P.M.

If you register your phone number after these dates, you should receive confirmation on the Tuesday or Thursday following your registration.

QUESTION: What if I don’t want to be charged for, or receive, a text message?

ANSWER: If you do not wish to receive text messages in the future, you may opt out after reading the initial confirmation message by sending the text reply STOP SRUTEXT.

QUESTION: I heard that my classmate/colleague received a voice message from the Salve   Regina ENS-Alert service but I did not. Why?

ANSWER: It is possible that we do not have your contact information loaded in the ENS-Alert service, or it may be inaccurate.  Students should contact the office of the registrar or use the student web portal to verify information. Faculty and staff should verify their information with the office of human resources.

QUESTION: I heard that my classmate/colleague received a SMS (text) message on their cell phone from the Salve Regina ENS-Alert service but I did not. Why?

ANSWER: To receive text messages, you will need to provide the university with your mobile phone number and carrier information (eg. Verizon, T-Mobile, etc).  Please refer to the student web portal page or to the office of human resources for further information.

QUESTION: I received the test message in my e-mail inbox, but when I clicked the link to play the message nothing happened. Why?

ANSWER: You may not have a default media player like Windows Media Player or Quicktime installed.  Download these players from www.microsoft.com or www.apple.com and install on your computer to listen to messages.

QUESTION: I received the message but I missed the information. What should I do?

ANSWER: While on the call, you can replay the message by pressing the star key (*) at the end of the message.  You may also check your e-mail to locate the link for that message.

QUESTION: I received the message but it kept looping or repeating. Why?

ANSWER: The system does its best to detect whether it has reached a live person or an answering machine. Sometimes loud ambient noises may cause the system to loop.  If this happens, use the mute feature on your phone or move to a quieter location to prevent the message from looping or repeating.

QUESTION: I see a caller ID display of 23177. Who is this?

ANSWER:
When Salve Regina University sends a call out using the ENS-Alert service, it will always display caller ID information coded in the system as 23177.  SAVE THIS NUMBER ON YOUR MOBILE DEVICE AS SRU-ALERT. THIS WILL HELP YOU EASILY IDENTIFY ANY FUTURE ALERTS THAT ARE SENT.

If you do not save this number as SRU-Alert, notices will continue to appear as 23177 on your mobile device. Because this number will only be used in emergency or severe weather conditions you may not recognize it as vital information without the SRU-Alert code name.
