In addition to recruiting in her home state of Maine, Cairns
is responsible for admissions publications and special admissions projects as
well as reviewing applications. She says that for her, the most fulfilling
aspect of this field is working with students and their families as they
explore higher education. “If we help students with any aspect of the college
search process, regardless of where they end up enrolling, then we have done
our job,” Cairns says.
Cairns has had many adventures on the road over the years. She
particular time when, after a college fair, she was lost in northern New Jersey
near the George Washington Bridge at 10 p.m. When she consulted a Domino’s
delivery driver for directions, he drove to her hotel with her in tow instead
of providing her with verbal directions and letting her fend for herself. These
days, Cairns finds relief in modern conveniences such as GPS, cell phones and
OnStar.
Outside of work, Cairns enjoys reading, shopping and family adventures
to zoos, beaches, playgrounds and dance recitals.
