Transfer Procedures
Transferring into Salve Regina from another school
The Department of Homeland Security requires that F-1 students complete a "school transfer" when beginning studies at a new school.
What you have to do before you come to campus:
- Notify your international student adviser at your current school (or former school if you are on OPT) of you intention to transfer to Salve Regina.
- Schedule a "release date" with your current international student adviser for your F-1 record to be transferred to Salve Regina. Your Salve Regina form I-20 cannot be issued until after this release date has been reached.
- Important: If you are completing (or have completed) your program of study or Optional Practical Training, you only have a 60-day period following this completion to have your F-1 records transferred to Salve Regina. Your F-1 student status ends 60 days after you complete your program of study or OPT.
- Complete the F-1 Transfer-In form and submit it to the Office of International Programs as soon as possible.
- Complete the Application for a Form I-20 and submit it with all required documentation to the Office of International Programs via mail or fax.
Transferring to another school from Salve Regina
When another university or college has accepted you, they will send you a new I-20 and transfer form to be filled out by the international student adviser at Salve Regina. Before you transfer, you must have this form signed and sent back to your new school.
Things to keep in mind if transferring from Salve Regina:
- On the release date, the responsibility of your SEVIS record transfers to your new school and Salve Regina may no longer access your SEVIS record in any way.
- Should your plans change, contact the Designated School Official at Salve Regina prior to the release date or the new school if after the release date.
- If engaging in Optional Practical Training after completion of studies, work authorization automatically ends on the date the SEVIS record is released to the new school regardless of the dates indicated on the Employment Authorization Document. Continuing to be employed on OPT after the release date is a violation of F-1 status.
- You must obtain a new form I-20 from the new school as soon as possible after the release date. The old I-20 must be retained as records. Should you wish to travel, you must use your new school's I-20 to re-enter the United States.
- You are required to enroll full-time at your new school by the program start date on your new form I-20.
- You are required to report to the Designated School Official at your new school no later than 15 days after your program start date.
If you plan to go back to your home country before you begin at the new school, you will re-enter the United States on the new I-20 from your new school. Do not re-enter on your Salve Regina I-20 if you are no longer attending school here.
