Majors and Minors

Major in Social Work (B.S.)

Students majoring in social work take 18 courses (57 credits) in social work and two foundation courses (six credits) that can be used to meet Core Curriculum requirements where applicable. Majors are expected to achieve grades of C or higher in all social work courses.

The field experience offers a minimum of 660 hours of professionally supervised practice in social service agencies, while a required capstone course is completed in the spring semester of the senior year.

  • A History of Social Work and Social Welfare Policy
  • Human Behavior and Diversity I and II
  • Methods of Practice I and II
  • Generalist Practice and Seminar I and II
  • Research Methods I and II
  • International Social Work
  • Senior Field Seminar I and II
  • Senior Field Internship I and II
  • Integrative Seminar
  • One three-credit social work elective
  • Three one-credit social work electives

Foundation courses:

  • Human Biology: Physiology and Health
  • The American Political System: Its Institutions and Its Struggles or Introduction to World Politics

Minor in Human Services

The minor in human services is designed for students majoring in disciplines other than social work. Students completing a minor in human services take a minimum of six courses (19 credits).

Required courses:

  • Social Problems: Analysis by Race, Class and Gender
  • A History of Social Work and Social Welfare Policy
  • Human Behavior and Diversity I and II

Students choose two additional courses from a short list of social work offerings.
