Major in Global Studies (B.A.)

The global studies major includes two interdisciplinary seminars, a directed research project or thesis during the senior year and at least one semester of study abroad. The specific program of study is designed in consultation with advisers from the Office of International Programs. Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 for admission and continuation in the program.

Students majoring in global studies take a minimum of 30 credits.

Required courses:
  • Introduction to Global Studies
  • Macroeconomics
  • Modern Global History
  • Comparative Politics
  • Ethical Issues
  • Cross-Cultural Psychology
  • Anthropology: Interpreting Cultural Differences
  • Global Studies Capstone I and II

Students take at least four courses in one of four concentrations: sociocultural identities, international development, a geographic regional focus or one of the Mercy critical concerns (immigration, earth/environment, identity, non-violence, women and racism). Concentrations should be chosen by the end of the sophomore year and before selection of a study abroad program.

Minor in Global Studies

Students completing a minor in global studies take a minimum of 15 credits.

Required courses:
  • Introduction to Global Studies
  • Three additional courses chosen from the required courses listed above
  • Minimum of three credits taken during a study abroad program

Study abroad programs for the major and minor are designed in consultation with advisers from the Office of International Programs.
