Department of Education

For more than 60 years, Salve Regina's Department of Education has graduated highly qualified, well-prepared teachers who are active participants in the life of children and schools. Our graduates work in classrooms from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, in many states and foreign countries.

We offer programs leading to Rhode Island teacher certification and reciprocal certification in the following areas: early childhood education, elementary education, special education, music education and secondary education in biology, English, French, history, mathematics and Spanish.

Grounded in a liberal arts tradition, our state-approved programs integrate a content-oriented curriculum and a comprehensive study of pedagogy with practical field experience in diverse settings. We emphasize culturally responsive teaching and revise our curriculum to keep our students current with innovative practices in today's schools.

Our students benefit from the personalized guidance they receive from faculty and school professionals. Through their extensive student teaching assignments, they develop skills that enable them to put theory into practice, observe cutting-edge methods and gain valuable experience in their discipline.

All of our programs are accredited by the Rhode Island Department of Education. Through the state's membership in the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification, certification for our graduates is reciprocal in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and Guam.

In this sophomore-level course, students develop strategies to help K-12 students from diverse populations and urban communities improve and/or gain effective learning strategies and positive attitudes about themselves. Secondary education majors mentor students in an alternative high school program designed for those at risk of dropping out. Elementary/special education majors serve as tutors for Books Open Life's Doors, a literacy program that provides tutorial assistance to elementary students who need support in reading and language arts. Students develop collaborative relationships with practicing teachers in order to support learning.
