Major in Art History (B.A.)

Students majoring in art history take a minimum of 17 courses (49 credits) in art history, studio art and the Freshman Studio Seminar.

Required courses:

  • Freshman Studio Seminar
  • Art History Survey I: Prehistoric Through Gothic Art
  • Art History Survey II: Renaissance Through Early 20th Century Art
  • Art Beyond the West
  • Impressionism to Pollock: Late 19th and Early 20th Century Modernism
  • Pollock to the Present: The Sixties, Postmodernism and Contemporary Art
  • Survey of American Decorative Arts
  • Newport Through its Architecture I, 1639 to 1860
  • Newport Through its Architecture II, 1860 to present
  • Senior Thesis in Art History (two semesters)
  • Apprenticeship/Internship in the Visual Arts
  • Two art history electives
  • Drawing I
  • Photography I
  • One studio art elective

Minor in Art History

Students completing a minor in art history take a minimum of seven courses (21 credits).

Required courses:

  • Drawing I
  • Art History Survey I: Prehistoric Through Gothic Art
  • Art History Survey II: Renaissance Through Early 20th Century Art

Students choose four additional courses in art history, approved in consultation with a departmental adviser.
