Major in Studio Art (B.A.)

Our studio art curriculum develops the intellectual and technical skills necessary to solve complex visual problems while providing students with the foundation for graduate studies and careers in the visual arts. Studio art majors choose to concentrate in ceramics, graphic design, painting or photography.

Concentration in Ceramics

Students concentrating in ceramics explore the historic development of this medium while gaining technical experience with our hands-on approach to studio practices. Coursework fosters creative problem-solving skills through the creation and examination of both traditional and conceptual ceramic forms.

Concentration in Graphic Design

Courses in graphic design provide students with an understanding of how to visually communicate messages. Through the combination of type and image, students develop the ability to critically analyze and professionally produce effective design solutions.

Concentration in Painting

An understanding of color theory, painting materials and drawing techniques is the foundation of the painting and drawing concentration. As they master the principles of rendering, discover the possibilities of color relationships, and explore their personal style, students develop a sophisticated appreciation of the painter's art and craft while honing their creative and analytical skills.

Concentration in Photography

The photography concentration explores both photographic techniques and the historic context of this medium. Coursework introduces the technical approaches to both darkroom and digital photography and examines the use of photography as a powerful means of personal visual expression.
