Newport Through Its Architecture II, 1860 to present
Department of Art
Newport Through Its Architecture II uses Newport as a laboratory in order to study its architecture and
culture in a manner that is informed, direct, and fully experiential. Students spend the majority of class
time on field trips to a wide variety of buildings, including historic churches,
schools, civic buildings, commercial structures, and Gilded Age mansions. Guest lecturers include specialists
from Newport's leading preservation organizations, including the Preservation
Society of Newport County, the Newport Restoration Foundation, the Newport Art
Museum, and the Newport Historical Society.
