Browning, Barone, Shorey Named Captains

NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University women's basketball head coach Corinne Hughes has announced that juniors Liane Barone (Johnston, R.I.) and Olivia Browning (Trumbull, Conn.), along with sophomore Lindsay Shorey (Ashland, Mass.), will serve as team captains for the 2009-10 season.

A co-captain last season, Browning averaged 6.1 ppg and scored 10+ points in six contests, including a season-high 16 against Randolph on Nov. 23, 2008. She also averaged 5.0 rebounds per contest, snaring a season-high 10 rebounds on two occasions (Jan. 2 at Springfield; Feb. 7 at Colby-Sawyer).

Barone, meanwhile, appeared in 18 games and averaged 1.9 ppg and nearly one rebound per contest. She dropped in a season-high seven points on two occasions (Feb. 4 at Roger Williams; Feb. 10 vs. Curry) and also pulled down a season-high six boards against the Colonels. Barone was also a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe against Coast Guard on Jan. 27.

Shore was a seven-time Rookie of the Week selection who went on to earn TCCC Rookie of the Year honors. She finished third on the team in scoring (12.8) and rebounding (5.5 rpg) and led the Seahawks with 76 blocks. Shorey recorded three double-doubles, reached 10+ points in 23 of 29 games, and snared six or more rebounds in 13 games. She also recorded a school-record 10 blocks in a game against Randolph on Nov. 23.

"I'm pleased with the team's choices for 2009-10 captains," said head coach Cori Hughes. "Junior Olivia Browning again has earned the honor, and her leadership and experience will be important in helping to fill the void left by Allegra Lovoy's departure. Junior Liane Barone brings a fresh perspective, a new voice and a positive energy that will be crucial to this young team's success. Lastly, sophomore Lindsay Shorey has returned to Salve Regina with a new air of confidence and maturity. I am excited to not only see last season's TCCC rookie of the year in this new leadership role, but back on the hardwood, as well."

The Seahawks open the 2009-10 season on Nov. 17 when they host Suffolk at 7 p.m.
